React Big Calendar Alternative

React Big Calendar is a solid choice for traditional calendar layouts in React. Dayflow Scheduler targets a different job: resource planning and editable scheduling surfaces.

Choose React Big Calendar When

  • You need a classic calendar UI in React.
  • Events belong primarily to dates and times, not to resources.
  • Your product can stay close to a standard calendar interaction model.

Choose Dayflow Scheduler When

  • Your app needs resource rows, grouping, and planning views.
  • Users drag, resize, inspect, and update schedule blocks as a core workflow.
  • You need visual states for progress, blocked, tentative, milestone, or split ownership.
  • You may need Vue, Angular, or Svelte adapters later.

Developer Experience

The React adapter is a hook plus a component, with data ownership staying in your app:

const app = useSchedulerApp({
  resources,
  events,
  views: [createWeekView(), createMonthView()],
  callbacks: { onEventUpdate: event => api.save(event) },
});

return <DayflowScheduler app={app} />;

The scheduler handles the timeline surface, resource layout, and interaction model. Your code stays in charge of loading and persisting data; see useSchedulerApp.

Migration Notes

  1. React Big Calendar's resourceIdAccessor maps to resourceId on the event, or to getResourceId when the value lives elsewhere.
  2. eventPropGetter styling maps to variant, style, or a shared styleRegistry.
  3. Custom components overrides map to Content Slots.
  4. onEventDrop / onEventResize map to the drag plugin callbacks, or to callbacks.onEventUpdate for persistence.

Decision Rule

Choose a calendar when dates are the product. Choose a scheduler when resource allocation is the product.
